Halloween - Take 2 (and 3)

Charlie, the loader driver, was the class leader in the school Halloween parade.  The caped crusader is Clara.  She decided to be the super hero for her school Halloween party.  As if two costumes weren't enough for one Halloween, Clara decided to be Princess Tiana for trick-or-treating.  I don't have a picture of Clara as Princess Tiana this year, but she looked identical to last year's costume.  We braved the rain for trick-or-treating, but the kids thought it was the best day ever.

Halloween - Take 1

We went trick-or-treating at Concord's Halloween Howl last Friday.  Friday was also pajama day at daycare for Charlie, so Charlie wore his Superman pajamas all day and all night.  Clara made a cute Rapunzel.  Charlie and Clara have a Halloween party at daycare on Halloween, so stay tuned for the next update.

The Birthday Boy

We celebrated Charlie's second birthday with a construction-themed birthday party.  We made "bricks" out of small boxes covered in red wrapping paper and the kids had a lot of fun building and demolishing brick walls with the wrecking ball.  The roadwork cupcakes were also a big hit!

Pre-K Soccer

Last weekend, Clara finished her five-week soccer program.  Jared volunteered to coach the six-kid team (for 45 minutes each Saturday morning for five weeks during hunting season!!).  The kids had a great time and actually made a lot of progress.  In a team full of blondes, Clara was #12, the short-haired blonde with pink socks.  Check out the highlights.

Week 1:   The first week started out a little rocky for Clara.  She wasn't too sure about everything and she didn't know any of her teammates.  Her team photos sum it all up, she wouldn't even stand alone for a picture.

Week 2: Progress?

Week 3: Warm-ups then "Kick the Coach" game

Week 4: Charlie loved being on the soccer field.  He has asked every day since the last game if we are going back to the soccer field.  Clara's team had their first game during week 4.  Clara didn't score a goal, but it looked like she had fun.

Week 5: They played another game during week 5, and Clara worked hard to score.  If it wasn't for the boundary lines, and if the goal would have been on the sidelines instead of at the end of the field, she would definitely have scored!  Clara made a lot of progress.  She stayed on the field for the entire game and cheered her teammates.  We celebrated the end of soccer with some cupcakes after the game.

Sharp Shooter

For Clara's birthday, she got a Merida bow and arrow.  Merida is the newest Disney Princess and a master archer.  Clara loved practicing her bow and arrow with Daddy in the backyard.  She was pretty good, but the suction cups didn't stick to the target and the plastic bow was soon bent.  Last week, our good friend, Rob, gave Clara a REAL bow and arrow that his daughter had outgrown.  It's pink and has a draw weight of 15 pounds.  She needs help pulling it back, but she has no problem sticking the arrow now.

All Aboard!

A couple weeks ago, my parents came to visit so they could babysit while Jared and I went to a wedding.  Before the wedding, I took a day off and we had some fun riding the Hobo Railroad.

Labor Day Camping - Backyard Style!

We camped in our backyard on Saturday night of Labor Day weekend with our very good friends, the Johonnetts.  We ate hot dogs, roasted s'mores, and played on the "structure" until dark.  Charlie was too excited to sleep in the tent, and Jack was too restless, so the boys slept inside with Amy.  But, the rest of us had a peaceful night of fresh air in the tents.

Squam Lakes Natural Science Center

Way back in August, while Jared spent the day running up and down a mountain and in and out of obstacles at the Tough Mudder in Vermont, the kids and I spent a wonderful day at the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center.  We saw a bunch of animals including turtles, bobcats, deer, huge birds, but our favorites were the mountain lions and black bears.  There were also hands-on educational exhibits that the kids enjoyed crawling through.  We ended our visit with a picnic lunch, and went home to make chocolate chip cookies for Daddy to reward him for his hard work.

Bikes and Bugs

A few weekends ago, I took the kids to a nice, flat, vacant parking lot to ride bikes.  Clara got a new bike with training wheels (thanks, Ella!) this summer and needed to practice.  She mastered the bike in no time.

(Sorry about the video quality)

Later that day, we had a campfire in the yard.  The kids found bugs under a log and even transported some worms to the vegetable garden.  There is nothing Clara can't do in a purple dress and pink shiny shoes!

A New Haircut

Clara said she wanted a haircut like Charlie's so it wouldn't take so long to comb in the morning.  Yesterday, we compromised.

Vacation!!!

We had an awesome vacation this year.  We drove to Jared's parents' house to celebrate the Forth of July with a quick stop on the way in Ohio to visit with Ian, Barb, Chase, Great-Grandma, Great-Grandpa, and Aunt Cindy.  Jared and I even snuck away for a night to a wedding in Chicago, where we caught up with old friends.  After visiting the big city, we were more than ready to relax at Baldy Lake with Grandma and Grandpa Carlson, Aunt Jenny, Ella, and Owen.  We enjoyed perfect weather, lots of mosquitoes, a treasure hunt, a midnight ER visit (for Charlie who refused to sleep, but docs couldn't find anything wrong), lots of swimming, successful fishing, craft projects, American Girl dolls, Jeep rides, squirt guns, and boat rides.  I'm already looking forward to the next visit.

Rough Seas!

We have had a very busy summer!  At the end of June, Grandma and Grandpa Carlson came for a visit.  Jared and Grandpa reserved a spot on a chartered boat to go striped bass fishing off the coast of Massachusetts.  They attempted the same trip last year, but their trip was cancelled due to bad weather.  This year they managed to get out, but had rough seas and not much luck with the fish.  Oh well, maybe next year...

While the guys were away, Grandma, the kids and I picked our way through the strawberry patch and prepared for Clara's birthday party the next day.  Party day started off with a sick birthday girl.  We almost cancelled everything, but Clara rallied for a few hours to enjoy the kid's pool before she slept the afternoon away.  Oh well, maybe next year...
